Why is month One so hard?
ByI’ve had a few questions about why month one is so tough. Well, let me explain by telling you a little story.
When I was a kid, we waited for winter to set in with baited breath. Of course, we’d rather have had the summer, but winter wasn’t a disaster. You see, we had a secret past time that none of us kids ever got sick of in winter….we had a 50 yard long, smooth as silk path with a steep downhill gradient. Running along side the path was small road on one side and the wall outside my friends house on the other side…where we’d sit and chat for hours while watching the unfolding spectacle.
In winter, we would wait for the temperature to drop below freezing…and then we’d get to work.
We’d get a few buckets full of sand, gravel and salt and spread it on the road down the length of the footpath.
Then we’d get dozens of buckets of water…and like an some ancient fire service, we’d have a 20 person chain gang, all the boys and girls from the neighborhood, passing buckets full of water down the line from my friends garage to the dump on the path. We’d drench it from top to bottom…and then we’d wait.
Before long, the path was frozen solid and we’d have the best slide known to man all winter.
Our parents could walk up the side of the road on the gravel and salt while we slid down the path. We’d spend hours sprinting down the hill and letting rip down this slide…on our feet, frequently on our backsides, using dust bin lids, broken up cardboard boxes, plastic cover sheets, anything we could think of.
A few people always had some minor injuries…but those were the days when a split lip or a busted arm were part of growing up…not a reason to phone a lawyer.
By the end of winter, we were broken, ragged and exhausted…but we were also exhilarated. We hardly noticed the winter going in. When the slide started to melt, it was always a day tinged with sadness…but also with joy…because spring was coming.
It never got boring for a 14 year old. I’d say kids today wouldn’t find it nearly as much fun as we did.
Month one is like the slide. Spring is coming…but before it does, I have to make sure you get the systems right and can slip down the hill once the path is frozen for you. Right now, you’re preparing the ground…because soon, you’ll be sprinting flat you…and I don’t want you to fall and bust your arm when you do.
You need to know how all the systems work before we turbo charge your system. It’s the best way. Getting the work, doing it the old fashioned way and knowing what you are doing are important skills to master.
I want to get the slide so slippery, ready for month two, that traveling 50 yards will seem like a cake walk compared to now..and you’ll do it with less effort and more speed.
Month one is all about spreading the salt, the grit (in both senses of the word) and sand to make sure you don’t slip if you need to jump off the slide…as well as preparing the slide so that you can reach your destination faster.
What seems like a long way away now can be made much shorter with something as simple as a bucket of water…figuratively speaking.
You’ll love it…but more importantly, you’ll be ready for it.
