Online Writing – Is Online Writing A Dream or a Nightmare?
Online writing can be an exhilarating experience and a life changing activity, or it can be a frustrating drain on your time for little reward. In this blog, I’m going to show you how to make your writing both exhilarating and high-paying.
There are a few issues which most online writers suffer from.
The Online Writing Experience of Many
The first is that they find it extremely difficult to get enough work at rates of pay which makes it worth their while compared to the alternatives.
When you look at writing forums, online writers are continually moaning about how little money they make, how unreasonable their clients are, how low paid writers are ruining it for everyone by charging $2 for a 500 word article and how life sucks as a writer.
I tend not to hang around in these places because they are infected with negativity.
In any business I’ve ever been involved in, I’ve always tried to figure things out on my own. Online writing is no different. If I had listened to the writers on the forums and in the writing classes, you wouldn’t be reading this blog…and here’s the reason why.
Writing on the internet for webmasters and other content buyers can be incredibly lucrative. It’s possible to earn more than $100 an hour from writing and writing services.
This earn rate is way out of kilter with most writers experience. Whenever I tell a writer about how much it’s possible to earn, I’m usually met with incredulity. What they fail to realise is that this type of income distribution is typical of every single business. Let me explain.
Every business industry and sector has as a relatively predictable distribution of incomes.
What I mean by that is that in all businesses, there are a few people at the bottom who earn a very low wage compared to the average. Then, there are the average wage earners who earn roughly what most of their peers earn.
At the top however, there is another group who do things differently. This group earns a huge amount more than the average. It is true in law, stock trading, poker playing, medicine, psychology, and any other field you care to name.
These people do many little things differently…and because of these small changes, they enjoy a disproportionate increases in their earning power. Writing is no different.
Online Writing…And The 80/20 Rule.
When someone on a forum or blog tells me that it’s impossible to write on the Internet and make thousand dollars a day, I tell them I agree. I know it’s impossible … for them…with their mindset and their understanding right now.
You see, they are thinking like everyone else and they are doing what everyone else is doing.
When you work like this in any business or industry, you’re going to get what everyone else is getting. To think otherwise is the definition of insanity.
Online writing really boils down to a few variables within a very predictable equation.
Most people think writing skill is one of those variables. To a degree, it is, but writing skill has a much smaller effect on the rate at which you earn money that you might think.
I’m not a great writer. I’m sure a lot of writing purists will say there are mistakes everywhere on this blog and all sorts of rules are broken…and there are … because I’m not really worried about writing in a way for people to grade like teachers.
I’m writing to communicate ideas and thoughts. As long as you get the message, I really don’t mind how good the writing is from a technical point of view.
When Quality Counts – and When it Doesn’t
I don’t want the writing to be riddled with spelling and grammar mistakes but I recognise the direct link between being absolutely 100% perfect and the rate at which I earn money as an online writer.
If you are so preoccupied with what your English teacher would think of what you are writing, online writing isn’t going to produce a more than average income for you.
The reason is that all the writers are thinking exactly the same way. I don’t think like a writer…I look at it like a business. My goal when I write is to maximise my income. Good enough is good enough. If this is your goal…read on.
Many writers pour over each word, each sentence and each piece of punctuation. They miss the most important part (for me anyway). The connection that the time taken to pour over every detail is marginal in terms of the return it which brings. Webmasters who are buying the writing for these writers generally don’t notice the types of writing errors that the writers themselves will notice…though there are a few exceptions.
Profit Maximisation
The writers are looking through the business from their own eyes instead of through the buyer’s eyes. This is what keeps the vast majority of online web writers stuck in the $100 to $150 a day category…hardly a living wage.
This income level is the playground of the amateur work at home moms who have fantasised about being writers.
In their minds, they have glamorised idea of it…but to earn $3000 or more per week from writing is hard work. There are other, easy ways to earn more money from webmasters which thankfully make up for the tough job of writing this volume.
What most amateurs do is turn writing into backbreaking job for low pay.
The reason is simple … they don’t understand the business of writing.
The second variable, in addition to getting enough writing is to do it quickly enough in order to maximise the income from the time spent on the activity.
There are several factors involved in doing this properly.
The first is to understand the processes involved in writing. As an online writer, you have to go through several stages in order to get the work, research it, do it and hand it back. At each stage in the process there are multiple leverage points which can be utilised and exploited to increase earnings.
For example, winning enough work can be a time-consuming process unless you fundamentally understand the average expected numbers from this activity. Once the numbers are understood clearly and a marketing strategy has been devised to get enough work, it becomes painless to stuff your diary to overflowing point any time you want…with high-paying work.
Doing the work quickly is where most online writers fall down. It isn’t because they can’t do the work quickly, it’s because the work which they choose (or, more accurately, the buyers who choose them) and the marketing mechanisms they have in place bring them the wrong type of buyers.
If they had the right type of buyers, on the right topics, they could treble or quadruple or more the amount of money they earn from writing…and build in long term equity into their business in the process.
Think about it … if you are a work at home mom who likes to write on the web sometimes, which topic would you be able to write about faster? Mongolian goat cheese or parenting?
The lack of efficiency and selectivity in the marketing cycle for online writers is one of the biggest reasons that there income never makes it past a low, grinding level.
When The Breakthrough Comes
When online writers finally understand exactly what it is they should be doing, when they see the numbers, understand the strategies and get to the bottom of the writing business, their income explodes.
The “aha” moments come thick and fast as they finally understand exactly how to maximise their profits.
Online writing can be a rewarding and life changing activity which can eventually produce a near passive income. Done correctly, almost anyone can go from zero experience and knowledge to semi-retired within 12 months. This is what I teach on the Outsource Secrets Course.
